FAQ: Joining SigEp

Why join SigEp?

As cliche as it might sound, our fraternity really is Different, especially at MIT. To begin with, we don't focus on Rush, we recruit. New members are full brothers when they join and we don't have pledges or a pledge program, we have something better: the Balanced Man Program (BMP), a four year development program that lasts throughout your entire time as an undergrad. One of our values is "Sound Mind, Sound Body" and our Sound Body program is crucial for maintaining balance especially at a place like MIT where physical health can easily be overlooked.

Our fraternity also has extremely good relations with both our alumni and our national fraternity. We have our alumni to help us with finances, careers, and mentorship and we rely on our national fraternity for leadership retreats, chapter development workshops and great opportunities to travel to national meetings and events. It helps a lot when your fraternity is the largest national fraternity in the country, especially when you know you can take advantage of such things as the Red-Door Policy, an informal agreement between all SigEp Chapters across the country which lets any member of the fraternity crash at their house if they need a place to stay for the night.

Aside from all these things, all the members of our fraternity, no matter how different they are, can rely on the fact that the thing that binds us together is a strong commitment to the values of our fraternity: Balance, Sound Mind and Body, and Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love.

How do I join SigEp?

The first step towards joining SigEp is coming to some of our events (even something as simple as going to lunch with some of us) and learning about the different brothers and our fraternity's values. You can contact our VP Recruitment at recruitment@mitsigep.org to learn more.

What events does SigEp do for Recruitment?

SigEp does all kinds of events for recruitment but the majority of our events are just everyday activities that we participate in such as IM sports, working out at the gym, studying on campus, having dinner together on Sunday evenings, or eating lunch together throughout the week. On weekends we also do different activities that anyone is welcome to such as snowboarding/skiing trips, rockclimbing, paintball, movies, road trips, and various activities in Boston

How can I participate in recruitment events?

Talk to any of the brothers in SigEp or contact our VP of Recruitment at recruitment@mitsigep.org.

What is the Time Commitment for Joining SigEp?

The time commitment for joining our fraternity is pretty simple, you need to come to chapter meetings once a week and you should try and participate in fraternity events whenever you can. This means maybe 1 hour on the weekend for Chapter meeting and maybe a couple hours during the week to play IM sports, help with a recruitment event, or go to lunch and just hang out. One of the hallmarks of our fraternity, the Balanced Man Program, is designed not to interfere with or make life at MIT more difficult, but rather to make it easier and more balanced and enjoyable. So, the time commitments are usually ones that are useful and helpful and not something seen as a burden.

How much money is this going to cost me? (what do you get when you pay?)

Joining SigEp costs a one time fee of $275 paid to our national organization. For new members, your first semester dues to our local chapter are $125, while the dues for all returning brothers are $300 per semester. These dues allow us to hold the programs, events, trips, and socials that we have throughout the term.
