National History

SigEp was founded at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, on November 1, 1901 on the cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. Today, over 244,000 men have joined the fraternity and taken a vow to uphold these values. With over 15,000 current undergraduates at more than 260 colleges across the nation, Sigma Phi Epsilon is the nation's largest fraternity.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is supported by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. The Foundation was founded to help develop the scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and personal potential of SigEp undergraduates. The Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation provided over $1 million to Sigma Phi Epsilon in program support and scholarships in 2001. Our chapter sees the fruits of this foundation when they send their men to the annual Carlson Leadership Academies, the Ruck Leadership Institute, or when they apply for and win scholarships such as the $1000 Hicks Scholarship, and the Balanced Man Quest to Greece.

Additionally, Sigma Phi Epsilon is the first fraternity to abolish the traditional pledging model for becoming brothers in the fraternity. There is no pledging and no hazing in the Balanced Man Chapters of Sigma Phi Epsilon. The traditional model has been replaced by an innovative new program called the Balanced Man Program.

Our Chapter

The Massachusetts Delta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was originally chartered on February 22nd, 1952. In the early years, SigEp was one of the strongest Fraternities at MIT with over seventy members. The Chapter was even able to purchase two beautiful brownstones on Beacon Street for its brothers to live in. Mass Delta won Buchanan cups, Sigma Phi Epsilon's highest honor for a Chapter, in 1961, 1967, 1969, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1989, and 1991.

In 1998, Mass Delta was converted from a traditional pledging-model chapter to a Balanced Man Program (BMP) Chapter. The Chapter has since been grounded in the Balanced Man Ideal, and is committed to being a non-pledging, non-hazing organization.
