In order to achieve the vision of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity of Building Balanced Leaders for the World's Communities, Sigma Phi Epsilon examined the ancient Greek emphasis on excellence through balance. Excellence through balance means possessing moral, intellectual, and physical strength.
The Balanced Man Program is Sigma Phi Epsilon's award-winning leadership development program that seeks development of individuals of, by, and for the community. The Balanced Man Program is Sigma Phi Epsilon's way of increasing
-Involvement of older member
-Community involvement
-The quality of understanding the values articulated in the Ritual
-Development of good leadership practices, including but not limited to goal setting, mentoring, and respect for self and others.
First implemented in 1992, the BMP is a self-paced personal development experience built upon the idea that Universal Respect for Self and Others is necessarily the foundation upon which a Sound Body in a Sound Mind must be built.
In order to promote Universal Respect for Self and Others, Sigma Phi Epsilon has eliminated the pledge process: a new brother is a full member from the moment he accepts his invitation to join Sigma Phi Epsilon. All rights and privileges are bestowed upon new members from the beginning, and there is no social hierarchy of brothers as would exist in a two-tiered pledging model. At Sigma Phi Epsilon, we do not restrict our recruiting to a single rush week: we seek excellent members all year.
Throughout the four year development process, the Balanced Man Program builds bonds of lasting friendship that foster an environment conducive to leadership and academic fortitude. Our brotherhood is build on four challenges that evolve as a member progresses through his college career; these challenges include fulfillment of responsibility of self, of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the community; these challenges foster individual development both personal and professional while growing the community closer together.
Through the Balanced Man Program, SigEps are exposed to leadership, experiential learning, personal development, mentoring, and other positive activities that promote the growth of universal respect through balanced living. Brothers track their progress through the Quest workbook, which continues to challenge the brother from the day he joins Sigma Phi Epsilon to the day he graduates. The expectations of the brothers are based on their level of experience in academic, campus, and personal aspects of their lives, linking these to the values and rituals of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
The cornerstones of the Balanced Man Program center on Mentoring, Community Involvement, Experiential Learning, and Brotherhood. These form the foundation not only of becoming a Balanced man, but also a mature professional.
